Though a majority of healthcare organizations are implementing electronic health record (EHR) systems, many aren’t confident they’ll be able to meet meaningful use requirements to receive federal incentive payments, according to a recent survey.

Many organizations still have quite a way to go to meet the first stage of the EHR incentive programs’ meaningful use requirements, despite Stage 2 Meaningful Use requirements having already announced.

More than 70% of hospital and health system business leaders say their organizations are at least half-way finished an EHR adoption, according to a recent survey from KPMG LLP. However, just 48% said they’re confident in their organization’s readiness to meet Stage 1 Meaningful Use requirements.

The biggest obstacles to meeting the requirements, according to survey respondents:

  1. Difficulty in understanding meaningful use requirements (cited by 25% of the leaders surveyed)
  2. Challenges in training and creating organizational change (20%)
  3. Difficulty capturing electronic data as part of clinical workflows (18%)
  4. Lack of a team dedicated to planning for meaningful use (12%), and
  5. Lack of certified EHR technology (6%).
